The MAC Superior Series six piece set is a cook-led collection of five knives plus a ceramic sharpening rod. It brings together a 20cm utility/chef’s knife, a 16.5cm cleaver-style knife, a 21cm fillet knife, a 13cm paring knife and a 22.5cm bread/roast slicer.

The mix is broader and more specialist than a typical starter block, making it a good fit for an enthusiastic cook who wants to prepare meat and fish as well as vegetables. The ceramic rod keeps the thin, hard edges in shape. Made in Japan.

We chose SU-6BS because the sixth piece is useful maintenance, not another redundant knife. The blade selection also reaches into filleting and heavier vegetable work, so it offers real capability beyond a basic chef/paring/bread trio.
